  8. This is the Winmag.com URL Discombobulator described in the 
  9. April 17, April 24th, May 1st, and May 8th, 2000 issues of Karen's 
  10. "Power Tools" Newsletter.  By Karen Kenworthy ( http://www.winmag.com/karen ).

  12. This program can determine the IP address(es) associated with any valid 
  13. domain name (such as microsoft.com).  It can also determine the domain
  14. names associated with most IP addresses (if the owner of the IP
  15. address has created the appropriate PTR records in the DNS server that
  16. is authoritative for the IP address range).  As a bonus, the program 
  17. can also generate various alternate "shrouded" URLs for any domain
  18. name or IP address.

  21. Installation

  24. 1.  If you have not already done so, download and install the 
  25.     Visual Basic Runtime v6.0.  It can be downloaded from:

  29.     To install the runtime, execute the downloaded file, vbrun60-setup.exe.

  31. 2.  Execute ptlookup-setup.exe.  This is a self-extracting/auto-installing archive file.

  37. Run the program by double-clicking PTLookup's icon.

  39. To determine a domain name's IP address, click once on the main window's
  40. Lookup tab.  Then enter the domain name into the Domain Name text box.
  41. Finally, click the program's Lookup button.

  43. To determine an IP Address's domain name, click once on the main window's
  44. Reverse Lookup tab.  Then enter the IP Address into the IP Address text box.
  45. Finally, click the program's Lookup button.

  47. To view an alternate "shrouded" URL for a domain name or IP Address, click
  48. once on it's entry in the "IP Addresses found" or "Domain Names found" list.
  49. You may then copy a shrouded URL to the Windows clipboard by clicking once on 
  50. its entry in the URLs list box, then clicking the program's Copy button.
  51. You may cause your web browser to visit a shrouded URL by clicking once on 
  52. its entry in the URLs list box, then clicking the program's Visit button.
